Kalemio vs OpenAI Whisper API for Arabic transcription
For an Arabic-first product that needs word timestamps, speaker labels and subtitle output from a saved recording, Kalemio is a focused option to evaluate. OpenAI’s whisper-1 is a multilingual alternative with word timestamps and subtitle output. Choose by testing your recordings and the output your application needs, rather than treating a general transcription score as a complete product comparison.
Disclosure: this article is published by the Kalemio team. It compares documented interfaces and proposes an evaluation method; it does not report a new head-to-head test. Information was checked on 16 October 2026.
Define which Whisper you mean
Here, “OpenAI Whisper API” means the hosted whisper-1 model. It does not mean a locally installed Whisper model or a different provider’s Whisper deployment. OpenAI also offers other transcription models. Their formats and capabilities differ, so a feature supported by one should not be assumed to exist in all of them. See OpenAI’s transcription guide.
Compare outputs before comparing scores
| Requirement | Kalemio | OpenAI Whisper API |
|---|---|---|
| Main scope | Arabic-first transcription | Multilingual transcription |
| Word timings | Start and end times in the result JSON | Request word timestamps with verbose JSON |
| Subtitle output | Download SRT from the completed job | Request SRT or VTT as the response format |
| Speaker labels | Included in Kalemio’s word results | OpenAI documents a separate diarization model |
| Upload limit | 20 MiB and 10 minutes per file | 25 MB in OpenAI’s file-transcription guide |

These are interface differences, not evidence that one system recognizes a particular dialect more accurately. Also distinguish word timing from speaker segmentation: a timestamp on a speaker’s paragraph is not a timestamp on every word.
Where Kalemio fits, and what you must build around
Kalemio’s native API accepts an upload, returns a job ID, and lets you retrieve JSON and SRT after completion. Save results within 24 hours of submission. Longer recordings need splitting; speaker labels are local to each recording and do not carry across pieces. The API guide documents the workflow and limits.
For a searchable interview archive, store each piece’s offset in the original recording. Add that offset to the returned times before seeking the full-length player. Keep an explicit mapping between the source recording, its pieces and the saved transcript. Otherwise, a search result can send a listener to the right word in the wrong part of the interview. The searchable Arabic audio guide shows this step.
For a subtitle product, test the exported cues separately from the raw words. Your acceptance test should include readability, line breaks and the destination player’s Arabic rendering. Recognition quality alone does not establish subtitle quality.
Where OpenAI Whisper fits
OpenAI’s API reference lists SRT and VTT among the response formats and limits several newer models to fewer formats. Word timestamps use verbose_json with timestamp_granularities, which the transcription guide says only whisper-1 supports. The guide directs developers to a separate model, gpt-4o-transcribe-diarize, for speaker labels. Read both before designing a response schema that expects all these features together.
If you already operate an OpenAI integration, staying with it may simplify your provider setup. That is a workflow consideration, not an accuracy claim. Kalemio also has an OpenAI-compatible endpoint that accepts OpenAI SDK code with its own base URL and model name; the API guide lists where it differs. Equally, switching to an Arabic-focused service only helps if it performs well on your particular mix of dialects, speakers and recording conditions.
Compare recurring cost at your actual usage
Kalemio currently lists Starter at US$5 per month for 1,250 minutes. Included minutes reset monthly and do not roll over; plans renew until cancelled. At full use that is US$0.004 per included minute. At 100 minutes of use, the same US$5 subscription is effectively US$0.05 per processed minute. These examples exclude tax and additional usage. See Kalemio’s current plans.
For OpenAI, check the rate for the exact model in the official pricing documentation. Do not substitute a newer transcription model’s price for Whisper’s rate, or assume that a cheaper text-only result meets a timestamp requirement.
Budget for the complete pipeline: transcription, any separate processing, storage, retries and human corrections. Compare equivalent finished outputs at both light and normal monthly usage.
Run an Arabic-specific acceptance test
Create a small evaluation set before committing production traffic. Use audio you have permission to process, and keep the same source files for both providers.
- Stratify the recordings. Separate dialects, phone audio, studio audio, overlapping speech and Arabic mixed with another language. A strong average can hide a failing category.
- Write reference text first. Have a fluent reviewer establish what was said without seeing the systems’ output. Agree how to handle spelling variants and dialect words.
- Score meaning-critical mistakes. Count incorrect names, numbers and negations separately from punctuation or spelling preferences.
- Inspect timings and speakers independently. Listen at sampled word boundaries. Check speaker changes and overlapping speech instead of inferring these capabilities from word accuracy.
- Measure operations. Record completed-job latency, failure recovery, correction time and total cost. Include a recording long enough to exercise your splitting logic.
Kalemio’s published benchmark is not a substitute for this test. Its documentation describes a selected, narrow Levantine sample and scoring limitations. It includes Whisper models served by Groq, which is a different deployment from OpenAI’s hosted whisper-1, so it is not a head-to-head evaluation of whisper-1. See the benchmark methodology.
The decision
Evaluate Kalemio when Arabic transcription, word-level playback and speaker-labelled subtitle workflows are central to your product. Evaluate OpenAI Whisper when its multilingual scope and documented formats fit your application or existing integration. Keep the option that passes your acceptance criteria with the least total operational and review work.

If you simply need to edit and download subtitles without building an integration, use Arabic Subtitles.
